USA Visas - Visa Regulations in the United States
In the past, people without USA visas could stop in the USA to change flights. These people sometimes paid a fee to remain at an airport in the USA for a short period of time. They were monitored, to ensure that they did not commit any immigration or visa offences while in the USA. Many of these travelers are now required to have USA visas.
New Regulations for USA Visas
In August of 2003, the Transit Without Visa ( TWOV ) program was suspended. This was because the USA Department of Homeland Security was concerned that terrorists might use the TWOV program to enter the USA illegally. The result is that transit through the USA without a visa is now not possible for people from countries on which the USA imposes visa restrictions.
Travel for People Who Need USA Visas
The new USA visa regulations limit the number of routes available to people who do not have visas. Most travelers must either obtain a visa or arrange a flight that does not stop in the USA.
Obtaining USA Visas
The usual way to get a USA visa is to apply at a USA consulate or embassy. This process can take weeks, so it is best to allow plenty of time to obtain a visa. There is always a strong possibility of rejection, so you should have a contingency plan, in the event that you are unable to get a USA Visa.
Avoiding the USA
People from most countries can find alternative direct flights, instead of obtaining USA visas. Many airlines offer direct flights, to Vancouver from a number of cities in Latin America, Europe and Asia. Mexicana Airline, for example, offers special rates for VEC students on direct flights from Guadalajara and Mexico City. By flying over or around the USA, you can avoid the requirement for a USA visa.
