FAQs - TEFL Certificate Program in Mexico
Why should I study TEFL at VLC? Our school has graduated hundreds of TEFL teachers over the past six years. Our teachers are working throughout the world and are respected by those for whom they work. We do not graduate teachers that cannot meet our expectations. You cannot 'buy' our certification - you earn it!
Why should I take a TEFL course in Mexico? Central America is a continually growing ESL marketplace. By studying and completing your practicum in Mexico you are able to observe the culture as well as understand the challenges Spanish-speaking students have towards English. Additionally your training dollar goes further in Mexico than in the USA, Canada or any other 'English speaking' country.
Are your teachers certified? All of our TEFL teachers are master teachers - that is, they have been teaching ESL students around the world and have developed their skills with 'real' classes of students. Each teacher undergoes a rigorous training program during which they have to display their professional knowledge, practical and temperament skills.
Why do I have to 'pre-qualify?' Our course is not only physically demanding but an academic challenge for all of our students. We do not accept people into our TEFL course who do not have the basic skills to master the program and become a qualified teacher. Unlike many school we want to be totally professional and fair with our students. If that means turning you away because you have a strong possibility of not completing or passing the course then that is the way it has to be. We do not take your money knowing you will probably not complete our program. Your level of English grammar needs to be honed towards perfection, once you are in our program you do not have time to learn your grammar points - you must have the minimum proficiency level before you arrive.
Do you guarantee that we will pass the course? No, we cannot guarantee that you will pass. There are many variables. Your own grammar level; your ability to 'teach' and your interpersonal skills all play crucial factors in course completions. We do however promise to provide you with every opportunity to succeed and develop your new career.
Is your certification accepted worldwide? Yes, our certificate is accepted around the world. We have teachers working all over the globe who are successful and continue to represent Vancouver Language Centre with pride.
Why homestay? Because of the nature of this course you will be 'in school' 12 hours a day - sometimes longer! During your 'down time' most of our students take the opportunity to use our teachers resource centre or internet facilities to prepare for their classes, projects and materials. Our students seldom have time to worry about where they will be living or their meals. However our homestay families take their responsibilities very seriously and will ensure that your time with them will indeed be well spent. Your meals will be ready for you and your room always clean. By arranging homestay you take away a lot of pressure from yourself, allowing you to concentrate on your studies.
Are the students 'real?' All of your classes will be in 'real world' class situations. Your mentor teachers will integrate you totally into their classes of regular students. As you hone your skills you will learn the intricacies of classroom dynamics as well as class chemistry. Our students will be demanding but at the same time encouraging.
Why Grammar and Conversation? To be a well-rounded teacher you need to be able to teach all aspects of the English language. Grammar and Conversation are integral parts of language development; class dynamics differ in each type of class. Our graduates are equally comfortable teaching grammar or conversation classes.
How can you guarantee jobs? Many schools 'guarantee' TEFL graduate placements. We will work with you to realize your ambition. Many times we hire our graduates. There are always ESL jobs 'on line' especially in the Asian marketplace. Most qualified TEFL teachers arriving in Guadalajara are able to find a position within two weeks of being here. The reality is that ESL jobs for qualified teachers are easy to find, you need to be prepared to work anywhere in the world for guaranteed placement, however arriving with a strong recommendation and a respected certification will open the doors to an outstanding professional career.
I am retired from my career and would like a new challenge. Will my age be a disadvantage? In teaching ESL your age can be one of your main assets, not a hindrance. You are bringing with you many life experiences that cannot by bought or studied at school. Your students will range in age from children to retired people; therefore your life experiences will help you advance within your new career.
Can I take TEC / TEYL, TBE and Spanish at the same time?
My family wants to come with me. What can they do? Many TEFL candidates bring with them their husband or wife and often in the summer their children. We have many opportunities for family members including Spanish classes, field trips, and activities in and around Guadalajara. Additionally Guadalajara is a very 'safe' city and your family can freely explore without feeling threatened or uncomfortable. The school is located within a 5 minutes walk of the historic centre and the TREN - metro. We also have a great cafeteria where family members can reunite over coffee, snacks or meals at very reasonable costs. Begin your trip, or celebrate your graduation with a weekend in Vallarta or Manzanilla, or take time to explore the traditions and legends of Michoacan.
Visas and paperwork to travel? As always you must check with your own country as well as those you will pass through regarding your travel paperwork. Vancouver Language Centre is not able to provide you with information pertaining to travel paperwork.
Occasionally a student becomes sick or finds they need extra 1:1 coaching by their teacher in grammar. Arrangements can be made directly with the TEFL teacher and VLC for you to receive the additional help you need.
What happens if I become sick? Guadalajara has excellent medical care. It is always advisable to have travel insurance however for those minor problems you can feel comfortable knowing that Guadalajara boasts a fine Medical University as well as many prestigious clinics, hospitals and doctors. We are also the only school to have a Canadian trained and licensed medical doctor 'on staff' who will make house calls! Generally your medical expenses can be recouped from your private health insurance coverage upon return to your home country.
How many hours of actual 'teaching' do I do? This will vary with your mentor teacher, however you will have a MINIMUM 12 hours actual supervised teaching experience. Many times you will have many more hours as you interact within your class. No other language school in Mexico can offer this guarantee.
Can I get an extended practicum or more teaching hours? We frequently hire our top TEFL graduates who have a desire to stay on in Mexico.
We can make personal arrangements with you for an extended supervised practicum
