Northern Lights College (NLC) is the perfect school for students who want a small and friendly school in beautiful northeastern British Columbia. NLC is a public college with approximately 750 Canadian students and up to 70 international students from countries such as China, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Macau, Nigeria and Taiwan.
International students are very welcome at NLC and share all campus resources with Canadian students. The residents of this area are famous for their hospitality and enjoy getting to know international students in community clubs and in the homestay program. N LC is located in a natural environment. Students see excellent sunrises, sunsets, the aurora borealis and wild animals such as deer, moose and fox when traveling in the countryside.
At NLC students study English as a Second Language in small classes that emphasize communication. Listening and speaking are stressed along with vocabulary and grammar. Depending on their English level and interests, students receive 20 to 27 hours of classroom instruction each week. All instructors are dedicated and experienced professionals with advanced university training.
NLC has a strict English Only Policy! Students must use English on campus and during extra curricular activities. Students enjoy the “Meeting Canadians Program” which introduces them to Canadian recreational, social and cultural groups, and where they receive advice about how to meet and talk with Canadians.
NLC also offers first and second year university courses, certificates and diplomas in Liberal Arts, Science, Social Work, Social Science and Business Administration. ESL students whose IBT score is more than 60 may take credit courses along with ESL. A big advantage of attending a small college is that the average university transfer class has only 16 students. This means the instructors know their students and encourage them to ask for help if needed. NLC has assisted many international students to successfully transfer to the large universities across Canada.
NLC offers an exceptional homestay program. The NLC Homestay Coordinator meets all host families in their home to ensure that they have are friendly and have cross cultural interests. Students enjoy a private bedroom and 3 meals each day. Students also can choose the Student Residence.
NLC likes to have successful international students. Students are treated as individuals with unique abilities, interests and needs. We work as a team to help students meet their language or academic goals.
- For all students this means there is always someone to talk to.
- For some students this means providing extra homework.
- For some students this means providing informal help about advanced aspects of TOEFL preparation or an academic course.
- For some students it means providing extra help in meeting Canadians.
- For some students it means providing encouragement to use English more often.
We focus on Student Success!
Voice of a student - “The advantage of NLC is the close relationship between the people (instructors, schoolmates, staff). It is like a family. The atmosphere of study and friendship is stronger than in a big school.”
