Global leaders in international education to meet in Melbourne

Senior leaders from international education organisations such as the Institute of International Education in the United States, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the British Council, the European-based Academic Cooperation Association, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Netherlands organization for international cooperation in higher education (NUFFIC), will meet in Melbourne later this year to discuss the emerging challenges and opportunities facing international education around the world.

Organised by IDP Education Australia, the Global Leaders in International Education Forum (GLF) represents the first time, cross-regional international education leaders of this calibre will meet in this format, to discuss a range of issues which are impacting on the international education industry.

The GLF is being held in the lead up to the 17th IDP Australian International Education Conference (AIEC) in Melbourne in October 2003.

The AIEC is organised by IDP on behalf of the international education and development sectors. More than 1,000 delegates from over 30 countries are expected to attend the event from the 20th to the 24th of October 2003. The AIEC is the third largest international education conference in the world.

Global international education leaders from a range of organisations in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand will take part in the GLF. They will discuss the changing global environment and its impact on international education. Many of these international education leaders will then participate in the AIEC itself, presenting the outcomes of their discussions.

The theme of the AIEC this year, Securing the Future for International Education: Managing Growth and Diversity, is designed to give delegates the opportunity to examine the wide-ranging and significant implications of the future growth in global demand for international education.

The conference will focus on ways in which institutions, education organisations, state and national governments can meet the challenge of managing the two key issues facing the industry, the growth and diversity of international students. Competition and marketing, technology, perspectives from institutions and students, curriculum and products, policies and strategies, the role of business, and the international development environment will all come under the spotlight. The conference will explore ways to manage and secure the future of international education in the context of both economic growth and downturns in various parts of the world, increased student demand, security, terrorism, government policies and international politics.
