Teaching in China - The Benefits

Vancouver English Centre, Vancouver Canada

Teaching in China should be more than a job. This is a unique
opportunity to learn more about the Chinese language, culture and people.

See China

Like anywhere, life in China is exactly what you make of it. The interests of teachers vary greatly but the cultural opportunities for education, entertainment and growth are large enough to satisfy any adventurer. It is not uncommon for foreign teachers to plan outings with their co-workers or students during their vacation periods or days off.

The more you become involved in activities apart from teaching, the more complete and enjoyable your experience will be. Ensure that your Chinese experience is an exciting one, which draws from all aspects of life in China.

Teaching Terms

The duration of teaching contracts can vary from six or a year, depending on your preference. Many schools prefer a year contract with teachers but some understand when the teacher wants to "try it out" first.

Chinese Visa Expense

It usually costs approximately US$50 to obtain a visa to enter China. Some schools will reimburse this expense, when you submit the receipt after you arrive. Some schools will also reimburse any fees directly related to vaccines and immunizations required prior to entering China. School also sometimes will provide medical insurance. These expenses should all be discussed and confirmed before you accept a position.

Accommodation in China

Housing is often provided to all teachers, free of charge, by the school. Most teachers live in apartments. As a minimum, each teacher should ask for the following features:
  • Heat
  • Television
  • Furnished Bedroom
  • Sitting Room
  • Bathroom
  • Access to Cooking Facilities

Additional items, such as DVD and VCD players, are sometimes provided. Often, the facilities may be different than your country of origin.

Teaching Salary

Many teachers receive a monthly salary of 3,000RMB to 7,000RMB. Salaries and benefits, vary considerably.

Working Hours and Holidays

Typically, teachers work 5-6 days a week (depending on the season) with a maximum of 35 hours per week. The average number of work hours per week is approximately 30. Work hours often include school-related functions, such as demo classes and other promotional events. Although all traditional holidays are usually given, they may be moved to different days depending on class times. In addition, a one-week unpaid holiday is often given after six months. Unpaid time off can often be arranged, depending on teacher demand..

Living Expenses in China

Most food and consumer items are relatively inexpensive. The average teacher can comfortably live on 2000RMB or 3000RMB a month.
